Tony Trout to the Big House
The saga of Tony Trout took one more step forward with his sentencing hearing where he was sentenced to prison time for his antics in disclosing perverted and adulterous lifestyles of county officials as well as issues involving grand jury deliberations. From the Greenville News:
Former Greenville County councilman Tony Trout has been sentenced to 1 year in prison after being convicted in April of computer spying.
A choked-up Trout admitted to the judge that he was wrong and sorry for his actions.
Trout, uncharacteristically quiet as he left the courthouse, had no comment to reporters. The sentence includes 10 months behind bars. It was unclear where he would be imprisoned or when he would be required to report.
Prosecutors had said earlier that Trout was a “rogue elected official†who lied during his computer spying trial and shouldn’t be allowed the lenient sentence his defense attorney has requested.
Prosecutors made the allegations in written court filings leading up to Trout’s sentencing hearing.
Today’s sentencing follows a federal jury’s conviction on four counts of computer spying and wiretapping in which Trout hacked the county administrator’s private emails and displayed the contents on his personal Web site.
Trout’s intention was to expose what he saw as government corruption, his defense attorney, Ben Stepp, said in documents seeking leniency.
“This case, at its core, involved political dirty tricks,†prosecutors alleged in a sentencing memo filed Tuesday in response to Trout’s attorney’s written request to grant the former police officer leniency because his actions weren’t “sophisticated†and weren’t for financial gain.
“When anyone either resisted these tactics or attempted to moderate Trout’s demands, they became the target of Trout’s ire,†Assistant U.S. Attorney Dean Eichelberger wrote.
