Earl Capps makes light of the religious divide within the Republican Party. He centers his disposition upon the recent over-hyped encounter between Cyndi Mosteller and Mitt Romney in Charleston.

“The incident only underlines what could become an uncomfortable debate over Romney’s faith if he runs for the White House. The issue will be on the table in South Carolina’s early primary contest, where roughly 35 percent of GOP voters are evangelical Christians, many of whom view Mormonism with skepticism.”

Skepticism of Mormonism is fully warranted. With their familiar unofficial support of polygamy, their belief in a book that came from outer space, the bizarre belief that Jesus and Satan are brothers, their worship of genealogy as well as their flat-out wacko temple rituals, the judgment of any Mormon should automatically be called into question.

So, what I think Earl misses is the fact that the debate about Romney’s adherence to the Mormon cult is a debate about his qualifications for office, not a debate about religion.
