Police say he lied about being beaten by police

A Bob Jones student who told police that a man driving a fake police car pulled him over, drove him to a graveyard and beat him made up the story to gain the attention of a woman, authorities said today.

“His wounds were self-inflicted,” Greenville Police Cpl. Jason Rampey said. “He did it to get the attention of a female.”

Caleb Hammonds Brooks, 22, was charged late Thursday with filing a false police report, a misdemeanor, according to an arrest warrant. He was released on a personal recognizance bond, Rampey said.

Brooks confessed to making up the story after investigators found inconsistencies in his description of events, Rampey said.
