GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - Federal agents detained more than 300 suspected illegal immigrants Tuesday in a raid at a chicken processing plant that has been under investigation for months.

The raid took place during a shift change, when police and federal agents spread through the House of Raeford’s Columbia Farms plant and ordered all workers to show identification, according to officials and witnesses.

Maria Juan, 22, was one of about 50 relatives and friends of workers who huddled at the edge of the plant after the raid, some weeping and others talking frantically on cell phones. She was seeking information about her 68-year-old grandmother, a legal immigrant from Guatemala who went to work without identification papers but was later released.

“Families are going to be broken apart,” Juan said. “There will be kids and babies left behind. Why are they doing this? Why? They didn’t do anything. They only wanted to work.”

Immigration officials kept the workers inside the plant and spent most of the morning trying to interview them and figure out how many are in the U.S. illegally, Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin McDonald said.

The number could be large. A recent review found that immigration paperwork for more than 775 of 825 workers contained false information, McDonald said. Immigration agents scoured the plant for paperwork and other information for the investigation.

House of Raeford processes chickens and turkeys in eight plants in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Louisiana and Michigan. A sales manager at the Greenville plant referred questions to the company’s Rose Hill, N.C., headquarters, where a woman answering the phone said there was no immediate comment.

Federal prosecutors and immigration agents have been investigating the plant’s hiring practices for several months. Twelve people have been charged, most accused of falsifying documents. Seven have pleaded guilty, three are awaiting trial and two have fled, McDonald said.

The Charlotte Observer first reported in February that plant workers were in the country illegally and company managers knew it.

One plant worker backed up that account Tuesday.

“Everyone knew most of the workers were illegal. It was no secret. We just came in and did our work and you kept to yourself,” said Dorothy Anthony, who works with sister Alice on the deboning line.

The women, both American citizens, were released after showing ID.

Many workers live near the plant and drivers in the neighborhood stopped Tuesday to ask about them.

Officials are arranging to care for the children of workers detained in the raid, one of several nationwide this year.

In August, more than 600 suspected illegal immigrants were detained at a Mississippi transformer plant in the largest single-workplace immigration raid in U.S. history. And in May, federal immigration officials swept into Agriprocessors, the nation’s largest kosher meatpacking plant, in Iowa. Nearly 400 workers were detained and dozens of fraudulent permanent resident alien cards were seized from the plant’s human resources department, according to court records.

Illegals crossing the border leave drugs, toxic Waste

and piles of trash in protected wildlife areas.

Federal officials said Tuesday the projects were on hold because the Interior Department hasn’t signed off on use of its lands.

The decision to suspend work stems from the Interior Department’s decision not to sign off on Homeland Security’s proposed finding of no significant impact in the environmental assessment for the Tucson West project, said Barry Morrissey spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Washington, D.C.

“It’s a real estate issue,” Morrissey said. “It’s a land-use issue that, unfortunately, is trickling down.”

Radical Environmentalists are pleased with the open border.

The surveillance towers are not covered by a waiver created in the 2005 Real ID Act, which allows Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff to waive border projects’ compliance with federal regulations, according to the Southwest representative of Defenders of Wildlife, a group that works to protect endangered species.

Homeland Security is being forced to go through National Environmental Policy Act steps, which in this case require the approval of the Interior Department.

The Virtual fence delay has drawn an inquiry from Sen. Judd Gregg, R N.H., a member of the Senate Homeland Security Appropriations subcommittee, is asking U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Ralph Basham for an update on efforts to implement the program.

Gregg says the American people expect the federal government to gain control of the nation’s borders.

The agency has until the end of the calendar year to construct the remaining 332 miles of primary fencing and vehicle barriers to meet the mandate of 670 miles of primary fencing and vehicle barriers established by the Secure Fence Act of 2006. Through last Wednesday, the agency had completed 338 miles.

Chertoff has invoked the waiver four times in the past three years to move forward with fence projects, including three times in Arizona.

Typically, the two most important factors influencing the long-term success of an organization are the quantity and quality of  people involved.

This is particularly true for a country. Yet there has been barely any discussion in the U.S. prestige press on the implications of the demographic change imposed by immigration. We’re constantly lectured by the New York Times on the long-run impact of carbon emissions and by the Wall Street Journal on the difficulties posed for Social Security by the changing ratio of workers to retirees over the next several decades. But the basic factor driving these issues is almost off-limits.

That’s why there is a VDARE.com.

In forecasting the U.S. population, the wild card is always the Hispanic component.

For example, on January 13, 2000, the U.S. Census Bureau released population projections stating that the number of Hispanics resident in the country would grow massively, from 32 million in 2000 to 98 million in 2050.

When the Bureau conducted the decennial census on April 1, 2000, however, it found out that there were already over 35 million Hispanics within the borders—ten percent more than the government had previously imagined.

So in late 2001, the Census Bureau released “interim” projections incorporating the 2000 Census findings and projected that the number of Hispanics would hit 103 million in 2050.

Now, the Bureau has released its first full-blown set of projections in 8.5 years,. And they’re a doozy. The key figure: 133 million Hispanics by 2050, an increase of almost 100 million in half a century.

Is adding 100 million Latinos to the U.S. population a good idea? Will it “form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity”?

(That’s the first sentence of something called the “U.S. Constitution”—a once-celebrated document put together way back when by a bunch of long-dead white guys, some of whom were slave-owners.)

We the people are supposed to have a say in such things. But how can we have a say when we’re not supposed to talk about it?

The well-worn responses of Establishment figures to public unease about adding 100 million Hispanics usually start with the words “All we have to do is …”

All we have to do is fix education. Once we just figure out how to get Hispanics and blacks to stay in school and learn as much as whites, we’re all set!

All we have to do is create more good jobs.

All we have to do is solve the illegitimacy crisis and get the Hispanic out-of-wedlock birthrate back down below 50 percent.

All we have to do is solve the housing / health care finance / carbon emission, energy / infrastructure / and crime crises!

In reality, we don’t know how to solve any of these problems. And we are unlikely to discover and implement workable solutions any time soon. I’ve been following social science and public policy for 36 years now. I’ve learned that fixes for social problems are rare.

In recent decades, we did finally make some progress against crime. But we did it through the brute force method of throwing a couple of million people in prison.

And there has been little change in the racial disparities in crime rates. Racial and ethnic differences of all kinds have been strikingly stable since the 1970s. In particular, the word that best sums up Latino America is inertia. Things just sort of keep on keeping on in the general direction that they were already moving.

What we do know is that all of these troubles are exacerbated by the mass immigration of people with low human capital.

And alleviating some of that immigration-caused pressure is something we actually do have a rough idea of how to carry out.

But you won’t hear that from John McCain, Barack Obama, or the mainstream media. Why not?

One reason is that there are huge constituencies out there who make their livings out of social problems. They won’t make the problems go away, of course, because that would make their jobs go away too. Instead, more immigration by more people lacking in human capital is their full employment plan.

Yet the quantity and quality of the American population does matter in the long run. It’s not even that hard to do the calculations of the opportunity cost.

Consider high school dropout rates. In 2007, Nobel Prize-winning economist James Heckman calculated [PDF]that the high school dropout rate in the U.S. had bottomed out at around 20 percent in 1969, but rose to about 25 percent by 2000. Over that period, there was no change in the dropout rate’s racial ratio: blacks and Hispanics raised in the U.S. were twice as likely as whites to drop out (and Hispanic youths raised in Mexico were much more likely).

I estimated that the majority of that increase was directly due to simple demographic change—high dropout-rate ethnic groups just made up a larger fraction of all 18-year-olds in 2000 than in 1969.

The rest of the worsening may have been an indirect product of demographic change as well. More non-Asian minorities (NAMs) mean more stressed schools and more anti-education attitudes in the classroom swamping traditional American values even for the kids of traditional Americans.

Simple math suggests that, all else being equal, the ethnic change projected by the Census Bureau is likely to raise the dropout rate from 25 percent to close to 30 percent.

Why do we want that?

Similarly, the change in ethnic makeup of 15-44 year olds will, just by itself, raise the illegitimacy rate by 4 points.

You can do similar calculations for rates of crime, lack of health insurance, unaffordable housing, and other social distresses. Most problems are inevitably made worse by the immigration-driven shift in America’s demographic balance—they have what Peter Brimelow in Alien Nation back in 1995 called “an immigration dimension”.

Similarly, the burden imposed by affirmative action on individual whites will rapidly increase as the racial ratio of minority quota beneficiaries to majority benefactors shifts. And, note carefully, the Census Bureau forecasts that minorities are forecast to be a majority in the U.S. by 2042, only 34 years from now.

Overall, at the very least, we’ll have to get used to being a country of lower average levels of achievement. For whatever reasons, Mexican culture and human accomplishment don’t go together.

Agents assigned to the Border Patrol station at Ajo, Ariz., said the Mexican soldiers crossed the international border in an isolated area about 100 miles southwest of Tucson and pointed rifles at the agent, who was not identified.

In a rare triumph of justice, Anchor Baby Jose Medellin was sent on his one-way trip to Hell by the State of Texas. This prolonged case took15 years to come to its final disposition. This is the case where the government of our #1 enemy complained to the illegal World Court saying that the anchor baby did not receive help from the Mexican Consulate. As the case was reviewed by the Supreme Court, four out of nine thought that the jurisdiction of the World Court took priority over U.S. and Texan law. What a freaking disgrace! Ace San Francisco Chronicle reporter Jaxon Van Derbeken remains on the case with another appalling new report today on how proud illegal alien sanctuary proponent SF mayor Gavin Newsom showered $650,000 of public funds on illegal alien felons to provide them with legal services and “cultural affirmation” through open-borders non-profits. Blood pressure alert:

As San Francisco’s juvenile justice system shielded young illegal immigrant felons from possible deportation, Mayor Gavin Newsom’s office gave grants totaling more than $650,000 to nonprofit agencies to provide the underage offenders with free services - everything from immigration attorneys to housing assistance to “arts and cultural affirmation activities,” city records show.

Newsom has said the city began its policy of not referring young immigrant offenders to federal authorities for deportation under previous mayors, and that he reversed the practice after he became aware of it this year. However, in 2006, the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice - a community outreach arm of Newsom’s office - created a grant program specifically designed to assist, rather than deport, “undocumented, unaccompanied and monolingual” immigrants who were in the custody of the city’s Juvenile Probation Department or on juvenile probation, according to city documents.

The city provided $467,000 to three nonprofit agencies under the grant program from mid-2006 and mid-2008, records show, and another $200,000 was approved for two of the agencies for this budget year.

Newsom’s office created the program, in part, to deal with an influx of Central American youths being housed on drug charges at San Francisco’s juvenile hall, according to those familiar with the grant. Crowding at juvenile hall had led to protests among youth advocate groups.
“A key goal of this project is to assist these individuals to successfully navigate the juvenile justice system and achieve stability within the community setting,” according to a 2006 invitation issued by Newsom’s office for agencies to bid for grant money.

The grant language said the youths “require extensive support” to overcome “multiple complex barriers” in the justice system.

Money for the effort came from the pot of discretionary funding that the mayor’s office receives each year as part of the city budget.

The goal of the grant program, according to the request for bids, was to further the city’s “proud tradition as a haven for immigrants.”

In addition to immigration attorneys, Newsom’s office envisioned the program helping young felons obtain housing, food, clothing, educational and vocational training, English-language instruction, medical care and mental health assessments.

The program would also provide “spiritual, cultural enrichment and recreation activities.”

It’s hush money to buy hospitals’ silence on how illegal aliens have destroyed America’s healthcare systems. Although the “reimbursement” is only 2 to 5 percent of the true cost (with the rest passed along to paying patients) it’s been enough to buy the “ethical grounds” for hospitals’ self-righteous refusal to inquire about immigration status.

[Wow, that's really cool. First the Federal Government allows our nation to be invaded by a foreign enemy. Next, the Federal government forces hospitals to provide health care for the invaders. Then the Federal Government takes money that it has robbed from legal American workers and gives it to hospitals to keep them silent about the effects the invaders are having on American health care. AFTER THAT, the hospitals charge legal American workers artificially high prices for healthcare so that the hospitals can still turn a lucrative profit on servicing illegals. These high prices (together with insurer greed) precipitate an exponential increase in insurance costs. In short, AMERICAN WORKERS - as usual - are the ones getting royally screwed by (1) the enemy invaders, (2) the Federal Government, (3) Health care providers, and (4) Health Insurance companies ALL AT THE SAME TIME!]

Without their hush money, hospitals might join Americans to demand enforcing laws against both illegal aliens and employers, securing the border against illegal entry (including a real fence), and reducing the illegal alien numbers by the attrition via enforcement plan…

… So the powerful hospital lobby remains solidly in the ranks of special interests that have sold out the American people by supporting illegal migration. And John McCain? Despite his claims that he “gets the message,” he’s been a full-fledged, card-carrying member of that club for years and shows no sign of change.
