COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Several top Republicans in South Carolina, and even some Democrats, support a proposal that would require women seeking abortions in this state to view an ultrasound image of their fetus before the procedure.

South Carolina lawmakers planned this week to take up the proposal, which, if enacted, would be the first law of its kind in the nation. Gov. Mark Sanford urged House legislators to approve the bill, as did U.S. Rep. Bob Inglis, R-S.C.

Both said they hoped it would deter women from receiving abortions.

“Let’s give patients the information they need to make an informed decision,” Inglis said in a statement Tuesday. “Requiring ultrasounds may slow down the process a little, but shouldn’t such an irreversible decision be deliberative?”

Proponents say women would change their minds after seeing an ultrasound and choose instead to keep the child or offer it for adoption.

“I believe life is sacred, and in the debate over when life begins I believe that as a society we should always err on the side of life,” the Republican governor said in a statement Monday. “This new ultrasound requirement is an important one in that I think it has the potential to lessen the number of abortions carried out in South Carolina.” ….
