Microsoft device helps police pluck evidence from cyberscene of crime

Microsoft has developed a small plug-in device that investigators can use to quickly extract forensic data from computers that may have been used in crimes.

The COFEE, which stands for Computer Online Forensic Evidence Extractor, is a USB “thumb drive” that was quietly distributed to a handful of law-enforcement agencies last June. Microsoft General Counsel Brad Smith described its use to the 350 law-enforcement experts attending a company conference Monday.

The device contains 150 commands that can dramatically cut the time it takes to gather digital evidence, which is becoming more important in real-world crime, as well as cybercrime. It can decrypt passwords and analyze a computer’s Internet activity, as well as data stored in the computer.

It also eliminates the need to seize a computer itself, which typically involves disconnecting from a network, turning off the power and potentially losing data. Instead, the investigator can scan for evidence on site.

More than 2,000 officers in 15 countries, including Poland, the Philippines, Germany, New Zealand and the United States, are using the device, which Microsoft provides free.

“These are things that we invest substantial resources in, but not from the perspective of selling to make money,” Smith said in an interview. “We’re doing this to help ensure that the Internet stays safe.”

Law-enforcement officials from agencies in 35 countries are in Redmond this week to talk about how technology can help fight crime. Microsoft held a similar event in 2006. Discussions there led to the creation of COFEE.

Smith compared the Internet of today to London and other Industrial Revolution cities in the early 1800s. As people flocked from small communities where everyone knew each other, an anonymity emerged in the cities and a rise in crime followed.

The social aspects of Web 2.0 are like “new digital cities,” Smith said. Publishers, interested in creating huge audiences to sell advertising, let people participate anonymously.

That’s allowing “criminals to infiltrate the community, become part of the conversation and persuade people to part with personal information,” Smith said.

Children are particularly at risk to anonymous predators or those with false identities. “Criminals seek to win a child’s confidence in cyberspace and meet in real space,” Smith cautioned.

Expertise and technology like COFEE are needed to investigate cybercrime, and, increasingly, real-world crimes.

“So many of our crimes today, just as our lives, involve the Internet and other digital evidence,” said Lisa Johnson, who heads the Special Assault Unit in the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

A suspect’s online activities can corroborate a crime or dispel an alibi, she said.

The 35 individual law-enforcement agencies in King County, for example, don’t have the resources to investigate the explosion of digital evidence they seize, said Johnson, who attended the conference.

“They might even choose not to seize it because they don’t know what to do with it,” she said. “… We’ve kind of equated it to asking specific law-enforcement agencies to do their own DNA analysis. You can’t possibly do that.”

Johnson said the prosecutor’s office, the Washington Attorney General’s Office and Microsoft are working on a proposal to the Legislature to fund computer forensic crime labs.

Microsoft also got credit for other public-private partnerships around law enforcement.

Jean-Michel Louboutin, Interpol’s executive director of police services, said only 10 of 50 African countries have dedicated cybercrime investigative units.

“The digital divide is no exaggeration,” he told the conference. “Even in countries with dedicated cybercrime units, expertise is often too scarce.”

He credited Microsoft for helping Interpol develop training materials and international databases used to prevent child abuse.

Smith acknowledged Microsoft’s efforts are not purely altruistic. It benefits from selling collaboration software and other technology to law-enforcement agencies, just like everybody else, he said.

I was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church Cult in Taylors, South Carolina for about 12 years. We’re three years down the road from that and people are still talking about what happened with all that Phil Kidd business! That didn’t really involve me though (That was not the primary reason why we left), so let me take some time and tell you a little bit about my experience in a cult called Pleasant View.

First, I would have to say that moving to that church was probably a good thing. It seemed pretty good when we visited, and compared to sitting on our fundaments listening to Gene Griffen speak at Tabernacle Baptist Church during Dr. Sightler’s first major illness was actually very good. I suppose all was well up to the organization of Pleasant View Christian Academy. Nothing bad of itself was involved with the founding of the school, but a couple years into its history (probably around 1993), the stunning announcement was made that the school needed beaucoup bucks to shell out for subscribing to the BJ Linc program (This involved using a centralized Jonser teacher connected to remote classrooms via a customized Artisoft TeleVantage system at each remote classroom.

The shock was not that outside resources were being located to assist with the school endeavor. The shock was that a Church with a Pastor who claimed to believe the Bible would so willingingly hookup in an adulterous relationship with a heretical institution as Bob Jones University. After a while, I think that the BJ Linc became too much of a financial burden and was replaced by video-taped classes, but the damage had been done. The school was moving at an alarming and accelerating rate towards complete entanglement with the Bob Jones web of corruption. This was witnessed by its involvement in SCACS and with the Bob Jones fine arts festivals. So, since the early years of the school through the end of our presence at Pleasant View, I had a constant nagging about the Bob Jones connection that went something like this: “How can anyone who genuinely wants to serve God become willingly involved in a ‘Village-like-cult’ such as Bob Jones?” The answer played out before our eyes as we gradually became aware that we were involved in a cult, not a church.

#1 The people hurt by the church cult: As new members, we were very excited by lively, bold preaching. Sure things were said that I didn’t agree with, but I suppose I’d not agree with 100% of what’s going on at any “church,” so I tried to overlook doctrinal errors, racist overtones, and a general pope-ish approach to the ministry. What bothered me though was the people that got publicly humiliated and hurt.

I don’t remember all the names, but one I do remember was Tim Walker who allegedly “knocked up” a fellow Sunday School teacher. When they got married, they supposedly didn’t mention the fact that she was pregnant and subsequently, they left the church. No one really had to know about that - right? It was kind of a private matter anyway and they seemed like they were interested in doing the right thing. As far as I know, nothing but good has transpired in their family since they left the church (Of course I don’t know for sure). The problem was, the Pastor not only announced this from the pulpit, but he constantly harped on it for months and even years after it happened. In fact, when we left he was still preaching against that family.

Then there was a girl, probably 11 or 12 years ago who wanted to attend the school. She cried in front of the whole congregation. People in the church volunteered to pay her tuition so that she could attend the school. The pastor, however, claiming the “parent must attend church” policy, refused to allow her to attend the school. OK, fair enough. The problem was that shortly after that incident, the “parent must attend church” policy was disbanded, so it appeared to be a concerted effort to prevent that girl from becoming a student at the school. That situation was heartless, mean, callous, un-loving, and downright “un-Christian.”

There were more people who were publicly excoriated as false Christians, troublemakers, and people who “messed up” and could no longer be “used.” Even more people were humiliated by having private personal details harangued from the pulpit. There was the woman who taught at Mountain View (Cowpens, SC) who apparently was having inappropriate relations with a male student. There was Joe Walker who went to Brazil during Camp Meeting and was publicly harassed, preached against, and browbeat until they left the church as well. Scott Mills’ family was ultimately driven out in a similar manner. How about the missionary whose wife had short hair? They were berated, and generally mistreated until they had no choice but to leave as well. Some (like the ones who attended a contemporary Christian concert), seemed to try everything possible to accommodate the pastor’s demands, but all eventually were driven out even after they were humiliated and shamed by the pastor. Actually, every good family or good man that came to the church was - during the time I was there - driven out. Over time, that the pastor deliberately did not want good people in the church was a plain fact that had to be accepted.

How about the ones that tried to kiss Pastor Larry Raynes’ ass? The Griffins who moved up from Florida, gave it all they had, but eventually left. How about the Hazelwoods? You couldn’t find nicer and better people than that, but for some reason they were targeted for elimination. The Mills were good people, but were driven out. So were the Lilyquists, the Daugherty’s… DAWG!

The routine was humiliation: Larry Raynes would publicly expose something about them that he didn’t like. After that, he would harp on them over and over again. The other members - sensing the next victim - would begin withdrawing from them, isolating them within the church cult. In effort to restore their former standing, the member being attacked would publicly apologize to the church cult. Eventually, they would get discouraged and leave. Larry Raynes would then demand all members to eschew any communication with the former members. If he found out that someone was talking to former members, he would publicly expose that and then he would preach against them saying that those people talking were not right with God and couldn’t be right with the church cult or with the pastor.

Even people who stuck their whole head up Larry Raynes’ ass didn’t always survive. Consider “SUPER DUPER JONSER_HYLES HYBRID” Jeff Kain. He was still going strong when we left. He kissed so much ass that he (even after proving himself to be a complete loser and utter failure) was able to help bully out Brother Hazelwood. He didn’t last. He got ex-communicated along with the rest. The examples could go on and on. The leader of the cult made “examples” out of others to maintain an atmosphere of fear: Fear of doing something that the pastor wouldn’t like. Fear of being tattled on (As a policy, the pastor encouraged tattling and other gossiping… as long as it was to him).

Ron Paul may be silent right now, but his supporters are not! Kudos to the brave men and women in Nevada who had enough stones to stand against John McCain and to stand for the only candidate who believes in The Constitution of the United States of America!  From the article:

The state Republican convention was called off Saturday evening without electing national delegates, prompting protests from a record crowd that included many supporters of presidential candidate Ron Paul.

State Sen. Bob Beers, R-Las Vegas, the convention chairman, announced that the convention would recess indefinitely about 6 p.m., saying the party’s contract with the Peppermill Hotel Casino had expired and the gathering would reconvene at a later date.

“We simply had hours and hours of work left to do,” he said in an interview afterward.

It was the sudden and frustrating culmination of a long day that had pitted the party establishment that supports presumptive nominee Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., against the insurgent Paul supporters.

It’s time that someone did something! Kudos to the Paul-ites in Nevada!  John McCain should not be welcome in the Republican Party!  John McCain is not a legitimate nominee because he was selected by Democrats, not by Republicans!

Bob Barr would be a good President.  I’d rather have Alan Keyes though. The problem is that the American political class has solidified the “Two-Party System” to the point where a third party will probably never be viable. As the USA descends into fascism,  there’s very little sign that great men like Bob Barr and Alan Keyes will ever get to serve our great nation  in a meaningful capacity.

I say this not to discourage any third party effort: I routinely cast my ballot for third party candidates. I say this only to let you know that I am growing increasingly frustrated with the American political system. My future AND the future of my children and grand children is firmly in the hands of illiterate, uneducated, uninformed, immoral, unprincipled, careless, irresponsible, and corrupt voters.

“What do YOU have to worry about?” you ask. Well, look at all the hundreds of thousands of Democrats. These people are either sick and demented, concerned about their piece of the American freebie pie, or concerned about their own future in the party. Democrat voters know nothing about the truth. They know nothing about the Constitution of the United States of America. They know nothing about the sanctity of human life. They know nothing about the blessedness of being an American. They know nothing about virtue. They know nothing about morality. They know nothing about “right and wrong.” They know nothing about the importance of considering the future.  I mean, these people are dufices. These people enjoy being lied to!

The stupid, ignorant, careless and reckless American population is what scares me more than the top three  contenders clowns running for the presidency.  I wish to God that a third party would become viable… there’s just not enough thoughtful, intelligent, caring people around to make it happen.

Jeremiah Wright is a racist, bigoted, Islamic Jihadist. So is his pal “Fairy-Kahn” and Barack HUSSEIN Obama.

Speaking before an audience that included Marion Barry, Cornel West, Malik Zulu Shabazz of the New Black Panther Party and Nation of Islam official Jamil Muhammad, Wright praised Louis Farrakhan, defended the view that Zionism is racism, accused the United States of terrorism, repeated his view that the government created the AIDS virus to cause the genocide of racial minorities, stood by other past remarks (”God damn America”) and held himself out as a spokesman for the black church in America.

In front of 30 television cameras, Wright’s audience cheered him on as the minister mocked the media and, at one point, did a little victory dance on the podium. It seemed as if Wright, jokingly offering himself as Obama’s vice president, was actually trying to doom Obama; a member of the head table, American Urban Radio’s April Ryan, confirmed that Wright’s security was provided by bodyguards from Farrakhan’s Nation of Islam.

Wright went on to LIE more about America:

He denounced those who “can worship God on Sunday morning, wearing a black clergy robe, and kill others on Sunday evening, wearing a white Klan robe.” He praised the communist Sandinista regime of Nicaragua. He renewed his belief that the government created AIDS as a means of genocide against people of color (”I believe our government is capable of doing anything”).

Folks, Obama HUSSEIN should not only denounce this man as an anti-American-racist-bigoted-liar, but Obama HUSSEIN should demounce Jeremiah Wright for being a disgrace to all humanity. What is really disgusting is that this man has damned thousands of people who have believed that he was a Man of God who was leading them on their way to Heaven, when all the while he was damning their souls to eternal HELL.

I’d say, “God Damn Jeremiah Wright,” but God all ready has damned him. So sad.

Greenville County Schools, known both for its hunger for taxpayer money and for its flagrant waste and ineffectiveness, has been called to account for it’s illegal 1992 tax increase where it raised taxes over double the amount legally permitted. From the article:

Several hundred county taxpayers have requested a refund for their share of $6 million in 2006 school taxes that County Auditor Scott case has said exceeded the legal limit.

However, Case and County Attorney Mark Tollison said the county has no legal authority to issue a refund of school taxes and that taxpayers filing for refunds may have to appeal to the courts before they stand a chance of getting their money back.

Among those filing refund claims is Ned Sloan, county officials say. He has repeatedly challenged the government in court over taxpayer issues.

School board Chairman Keith Ray reiterated the district’s claim that its $13 million 2006 tax increase was legal, and that he’s “confident” the district can explain the levy in court.

At issue is 1992 local legislation that applies a four-mill cap on school tax increases each year.

School officials have argued they’re entitled to two tax increases ó one to cover school growth as required by law plus the added four tax mills if the school board votes to use it ó and that the county auditor’s office approved both increases in 2006.

However, an attorney general’s opinion says that would amount to “a double tax increase for the same item” and state Sen. David Thomas, who helped write the local legislation, said four mills has always been the total legal limit.

But Democrats are SO much MORE EVIL than Republicans (Excepting Lindsey Graham and John McCain who are the ultimate in wicked, irresponsible, unethical, treacherous GOOP), that’s why Republican candidates presume to receive the bulk of the Conservative vote. I digress.

What’s up with these scummy, filthy, disgusting Democrats anyway? They have no shame whatsoever! DAWG! If any Republican had as many known criminals, racists, and other disgusting people on his donors list, that Republican would be beaten and crucified before daybreak, but the freaking Democrats are so proud of the lies, deceit, and general corruption that they FLAUNT it in the media and among themselves. “Look at all the sniper lies I’ve gotten away with and those pathetic moron voters STILL vote for me!” says Hillary Clinton. “Look at all the corruption in my campaign and the idiotic, stupid, ignoramuses STILL support my candidacy!” she gloats.

Let’s be brutally honest here: if Hillary Clinton was a five-headed green-and-purple-striped alien monster from outer space and campaigned saying, “When I’m President, my life form is going to move here and we are going to destroy this country, then we will eat all of you, then spit your bones into the Mediterranean!” Hillary would STILL get 40% of the vote!!! Dittos for Obama HUSSEIN.

It’s safe to say that we’re all watching John McCain closely in trying to assess whether he’s worthy of our support this November.

Senator McCain’s done some good things in recent times, but he’s also committed some blunders that we, as conservatives, need to pay attention to.

Wednesday was one of those blunders.

McCain asked the North Carolina GOP not to run a television ad that highlighted Barack Obama’s ties to his Pastor of twenty years, Jeremiah Wright.

The ad did not involve the presidential election – it merely pointed out that the two Democratic candidates in the North Carolina governor’s race had both endorsed Obama, and that because of that, they were too extreme for conservative North Carolina.

Here’s a link to an article that discusses the situation.

If John McCain is intent on micromanaging the message of individual state parties, and at the same time unwilling to link his potential Democratic opponent with a revealing character issue, then it sheds doubt on whether he’s got the stomach to mount an effective and winning general election campaign.

McCain needs to tell why he should be president, but also why his opponent should not be president.
