WASHINGTON – A Metro train smashed into the back of another at the height of the Monday evening rush hour, killing at least six people and injuring scores of others as cars from the trailing train jackknifed into the air and fell atop the first.
One of the fatalities was a female train operator, Metro officials say. The woman’s name has not been released.
D.C. Fire Chief Dennis Rubin says more than 70 people were transported to hospitals. Of those, two people have life-threatening injuries and 50 are classified as “walking wounded” injuries
When I saw this story come across Fox News this evening, I realized something that the news people probably did not report. At least 6 people didn’t make it home after work tonight. At least 6 people will not be in to work tomorrow. These people were going about their normal routine – whatever it was – and suddenly came to an end.
Their personal problems don’t matter so much any more do they? If they were struggling to make ends meet or if they were financially well off, it doesn’t matter as much as it did earlier today. Maybe some were having relationship problems… or even trouble on the job… or (God forbid) legal issues: they just don’t matter as much as they did earlier. Suppose some were Democrats (h0w could anyone be a Democrat and have a clear conscience?)… maybe some just didn’t care much about politics at all. Suddenly, that didn’t matter as much either.
I think that most people continue through life with the expectation that things will remain relatively constant in life. We seem to like changes coming slowly… but sometimes the unexpected happens. The people who died probably did not plan on dying today. Others were not planning on being in the hospital tonight. Families, friends, and loved ones now have a void in their lives… and what if some had no friends, family, or loved ones. Maybe some were all alone and no one will miss them at all.
What if you were on that train and died today? Would you be satisfied with the things you left behind? Maybe you don’t care, but somehow, in the moment before the crash was complete I think we all would care if just for a split second…
… what about eternity? Suppose some of the dead did not believe in God. Suppose they followed a religion that kept them from salvation? Suppose some never heard the Good News of Jesus Christ clearly presented to them? Suppose that some were bitter over past bad religious experiences and decided to tune out God from their lives? Suddenly, the question of life after death has a new meaning, for it has been answered for each one of them in a very personal way. Even worse, those who perished are unable to undo any of the choices they made concerning Jesus while they were alive. The question is settled for them right now. Maybe some had repented and received the new birth from God. Maybe others chose a different way. I don’t know. I do know that heaven and hell are now more real to them than they ever were before.
I hope each one who has stopped to read this blog will take some time to think about what would happen if their life suddenly ended. I think we all would profit if we lived every day as if it were our last and be prepared for eternity should this day really be our last.
