The company that operates the Columbia Farms chicken-processing plant in Greenville has been added to a federal indictment that accuses the company and employees of knowingly hiring illegal immigrants, according to new charges filed today.

The company, Columbia Farms, faces 28 counts in a superseding indictment of knowingly hiring illegal workers beginning in 2001.

Two company managers – Elaine Crump and Barry Cronic – were previously named in the indictment and accused of encouraging employees to use falsified immigration verification documents, according to the indictment.

North Carolina-based House of Raeford, the parent company of Columbia Farms, has said it doesn’t knowingly hire illegal immigrants and has cooperated with the government’s investigation.
